BIOGRAPHY : Carl Papenfus from N. Ireland is a musician, songwriter, producer, publisher and label owner, with an unparalleled passion for his first love - drumming.
Carl’s professional career began when on signing with EMI Records with his band RELISH, they achieved platinum & gold album sales, and top ten albums & singles on home soil in Ireland. Key tracks, “Rainbow Zephyr”, You I’m Thinking Of” and 2016 hit “Got It Made” remain staples on Irish radio. RELISH inadvertently achieved international success through many synchs and covers of their songs, perhaps most notably by Westlife scoring a global hit with “Hey Whatever” and accolades in the Asian market scoring hits in Indonesia and in Japan including a number 1 single. Fans of the band include Larry Mulllan of U2, Queen’s Brian May, Paul Weller and Sinead O’Connor.
Having turned down much session work due to RELISH commitments Carl eventually did lend his drumming services to the likes of Andrew Strong, as percussionist in Players alongside Paul Weller’s Steve White, Juno Falls (V2), Irish legend Paul Brady, singer songwriter Lesley Roy for Jive Records US, HAL (Rough Trade), Steafan Hanvey and premier rock act The Answer on tour with AC/DC among others. Most recently he’s toured the world twice as drummer for Sinead O’Connor playing everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to the Montreux Jazz Festival, produced and performed her rendition of “Trouble Soon Be Over” for God Don’t Never Change: The Songs of Blind Willie Johnson and performed & co-wrote the soundtrack to Hollywood’s Harvey Weinstein movie/musical “Sing Street” a 2017 Grammy nominee.
Carl is a proud advocate of Ludwig drums having played them almost exclusively since his first set at 14 yrs old.
